Phytotrons

The high-tech phytotrons will be the heart of PEAC. In the hall-like ground floor of the building, 17 of these technically highly equipped phytotrons are currently being built, with different floor areas. Large research plants such as maize can be examined in very high phytotrons with an area of 30 m2, while smaller phytotrons with airlocks also enable experiments with pathogens. Common to all phytotrons will be the high-tech equipment that enables the maximum conceivable range of environmental parameters to be simulated. In addition to fluctuating and therefore realistic light intensity, humidity and temperature, the CO2 content of the air and the light spectrum can be varied precisely right into the UV range. The aim is to be able to reproduce all natural and conceivable environmental scenarios realistically and reproducibly in the phytotrons. At the same time, many of the artificial influences normally present in the experiments will not occur in the PEAC phytotrons. For example, the heat from the LED panels will be dissipated by a local cooling system specially developed for PEAC, so that there will be no technical influence on the test plants, even at extremely high light outputs. The PEAC phytotrons will be unique worldwide in terms of the precision and range of the simulation of extreme environmental situations. The complex technical supply of the phytotrons will take place via a separate building level dedicated solely to this purpose. In addition to the purely technical basic equipment of the PEAC phytotrons, the special design of the phytotrons will also enable the variable installation of new, robotics-supported techniques for real-time phenotyping down to the cellular level.
